I would like to say THANK YOU…

liberte

I have been thinking about writing a special THANK you page for a long time and this post is an intro to that page.

When I started writing this blog  I was still living in Dublin,Ireland and I didn’t foresee that the road will take me to so many different places around Europe since then. The places can be special on their own but what makes them amazing are the people you meet there. And not just people, but animals too 🙂 like my dear Evelyn ❤

In 7 years of living in Ireland, that land and its people became a place which my heart and soul can call HOME.  But at the time when this blog came to life I was feeling a great need for a change and I started by quiting my job in a very good Dublin pub then I moved shortly to Galway, thinking maybe to stay there over the summer. That never happened as certain events and the people that I met triggered my move out of Ireland and I have started traveling around Europe, starting with Grenoble in France. There I was with someone who deserves very, very BIG THANK YOU for everything that our friendship has given to me. She is also a fellow blogger, so here I invite you to have a look at her blog.

She is one of many people that I am grateful for being part of my life. It doesn’t matter how long you know someone, but the quality of relationship with that person. We all have people in our lives that we don’t have to see very often but when we share time it is mutually enjoyed and we feel blessed for the connection.

It is important not to forget some connections that have might been lost as they have influenced our life at the time they were actual.

olivesSince that initial move, I have been living a life mostly following my intuition which meant I was probably confusing friends with changes of my plans. In my mind I was keeping the doors opened to many possible paths and I know that sometimes I made mistakes and took the wrong turns. I felt I needed to explore, make mistakes, learn and deal with all the guilt that sometimes comes with all the changes that you are experiencing. It takes time to accept yourself and not to feel guilty if some of your friends and family don’t understand your changes and what your path is about. Even I sometimes don’t understand it and that is why I am exploring and looking for the one that is closest to my heart and soul purpose.

Some connections have been broken in the proccess, some have changed, many new have been born.

There are many wonderful people that I wish to express my gratitude for being a part of my life.  That is why I am starting with a THANK YOU PAGE

DAY 29(1/2): we found EVELYN in BRATISLAVA

Digital StillCameraMy dreams were mostly about Evelyn, since I got her in August last year there was only one night when we weren’t together and it felt weird that she is not curled up beneath my feet.

Digital StillCameraI woke up determined to find her and I wasn’t to worried at the time as I had a feeling that she is in safe hands and that we will see each other later that day. After coffee with Tomas and our second farewell I went to Janka’s office to collect A4 leaflets with Evelyn’s photo and information about where and when she got lost.

Digital StillCamera

Janka said that we had over 1000 shares on Facebook pages of associations in Slovakia helping to find dogs. Even the hockey fans of Slovakian national team have put Evelyn’s photo on their wall. I was pleasantly surprised by this and I thanked Janka for sharing it everywhere last night.

Digital StillCamera

Then I went to Horski park as she got lost nearby.

I spend next few hours posting leaflets in the park and around on all the bus stations and asking some people with dogs if they have seen her.

hot chocolateIt was raining so I had to take a break and warm up with hot chocolate. I kept thinking about Evelyn and I hoped that someone is taking good care of her and that they will realise whe has an owner.

Digital StillCamera

Digital StillCameraOnce I finished putting up all the posters I went back to Janka’s office hoping she would have some good news soon. It was almost 3pm and I thought that someone must know something about her as more then 3000 people already shared her photo on Facebook and people on many locations around Horski park could see the info leaflets I have put up.

Digital StillCamera And then Janka received a message on facebook with Evelyn’s photo on another page of an associtation that is looking for new home for dogs. This guy has seen our post and compared the photos and then realized it could be a same dog. AND IT WAS, WE FOUND EVELYN!

I was really relieved and I rushed to the tram and then bus to get there.

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraShe was in Vozovna Hrobonova, where I was that morning leaving leaflets on a bus station. But at the time I didn’t think of going to security guys in their box who were guarding a troleybus depot 20m from the bus station. She was with them since the morning and they kept her safe despite constant  nagging from their boss who didn’t want her there. THANKS to these guys and everyone in SLOVAKIA that has shared her photo online we have found each other again.

Digital StillCamera

and SPECIAL THANKS goes to JANKA for sharing her photo all around the net and calling around different organizations. Above is Evelyn enjoying her treat in Janka’s office.

As a result of this little drama EVELYN’S BLOG got record views from Slovakia, so we joked afterwards that this was her PR stunt 😀

Then I called our next host Josef from TRNAVA to let him know that we are together again and that we can come and visit him there….

DAY 25: PRAGUE experienced diferently and arrival to BRNO with happy ending :D

We left Prague airport around 7am after sleeping for 5 hours on a bench in waiting area.

I had a list of places in mind to visit and I was hoping to interview some of the people working in these organizations.

But it was one of those days when it will not be possible as I didn’t have an appointment made in advance.

First we went to NADAJE center for youth. There I spoke to a young volunteer, but he explained to me that I will have to contact their office to speak to someone about their work. I took the address and decided to visit them later if I get a chance.

IMGP1402Then I walked again to the boat shelter I saw night before. When I arrived there, the young man on reception was very busy and he wasn’t speaking English and when I asked about anyone else available to talk to me in English he said no. I realised that he is just too busy and he doesn’t have time to deal with someone who is not directly using their services.

IMGP1404Last place I had marked on the map was Armady spasa(Salvation army) shelter. Their I managed to talk to one of the officers and she gave me email address of the director of that branch. He was away that day so it wouldn’t be possible to talk to him.

They were just finishing serving lunch and I saw there was many users leaving the house.

It was already early afternoon and I was hungry, cold and with 50 korun (2 euro) in my pocket so I decided to go to day shelter of NADAJE and have lunch there and shower if possible.

IMGP1407IMGP1406When I arrived there was a big queue so I waited for half an hour and asked the gentleman on the door if I can use their services as a foreigner for a day. He said no problem and gave me a ticket that allowed me to get free lunch, shower and some clothes if I need. I had sausage stew and a shower. In front of me in shower line was an old man who has obviously lived on a street for many years. It took him more then 20 minutes to get ready for shower and when I saw his legs and feet, the reality of being homeless strike me hard. I decided to take a photo of his feet while he was having a shower. I am posting it here as a clear example what happens to people on the street and I don’t mean to be disrespectful to him or others that I saw in the line there.

Evelyn waited outside so she was happy to see me coming back. As we didn’t have anything organised to sleep in Prague that night and I was almost without money I decided to get on a train in direction of BRNO.

IMGP1411IMGP1416IMGP1418IMGP1419We had to make few stops as I couldn’t afford to buy tickets. I did end up buying one ticket for a short distance ride to Zdar nad Sazavou which I later found has an Unesco heritage pilgirmage church.

IMGP1422IMGP1423While we were changing trains I got a credit top up from a friend in France which helped a lot as Adrian(our host in Wroclaw) gave me the address of couch surfing meeting in Brno.  We arrived to BRNO around 9pm and after searching for awhile we got to couch surfing meeting in a cool bar.

IMGP1425There Evelyn quickly made new friends and I exchange stories with people.A nice Italian guy bought me a beer and  Anna asked me do we have anywhere to sleep and as I said no, she offered a bed in her dormitory room. So this was truly LAST MINUTE COUCH 😀

After such an eventful day I was so grateful for a warm bed and I slept like a baby and so did Evelyn… like a puppy 😀 😛

DAY 24: we get to PRAGUE; local beer, beautiful old town and sleep on airport…

IMGP1351We got up early in train station of Bystrzyca Kłodzka and we hoped on a regional train that took us to USTI NAD LABEM in Czech republic.

IMGP1352IMGP1356From there we got to another small town and I took a walk trying to hitchhike but at the end we had to get another local train and then a faster train to PRAGUE, passing through Pardubice. To save on money, I paid ticket to Pardubice and we stayed on till Prague.IMGP1377

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraI tried to get a last minute couch in Prague, but when I asked for it I thought I will be earlier in Prague. On the day we arrived our two potential hosts were both out of town. So I decided to walk around the old town and ask in tourist office about homeless shelters.

Digital StillCameraI went to the boat on the river Vltava that is one of the shelters run by the city of Prague. As I arrived there I realized that you have to be Czech citizen to be able to enter and also I would have to be there early in the morning to ask for a night stay.

I went back to old town and enjoyed a local beer as Evelyn was playing with the waitress.

Digital StillCameraIMGP1394As it was getting colder, we took a last bus to airport where I sat on a bench reading a book and pretended that I am waiting for morning flight. Evelyn fall asleep very quickly and I followed holding a book in my hand.

DAY 23: center for homeless in WROCLAW and on the road to PRAGUE…VIDEO

Digital StillCameraIt was time to say goodbye to Wroclaw after amazing time here… When I first planned the route, Wroclaw wasn’t on the list but I am so happy that I decided to visit this vibrant and active city. Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraOn our last morning there we went to see a center for homeless people that is run by a big non profit association that has many centers around Poland. We spoke to Olek, who was very busy but he took some time to tell us about their work. He was running a computer lab where they have IT course for their residents. We didn’t have time to see much more of the center but we stayed in touch and I am hoping to see Olek again in near future. The association is

St Brother Albert Aid Society

and it has been helping people without home for more then 30 years. Here is the link to their website Digital StillCameraLater we picked our stuff in Adrian’s flat and we said goodbye to our bed 😀 We went to train as it was getting dark and I knew we won’t be able to get to Prague that day. But I was hoping to get as near as possible. We started with regional train, then we tried to hitchhike in a small place outside of Wroclaw, that didn’t work out so we took few other trains stopping in small places as I didn’t have enough money to pay for full tickets. Here are few photos from our stops on the way… Digital StillCamera Digital StillCamera IMGP1416 IMGP1418 IMGP1417 In one of them called Swardzow Wroclawski I recorded these two videos:

Asking for more money 😛

Review of the trip so far

At the end we manage to get as far as Bystrzyca Klodzka, a small town near the border with Czech republic. Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraIMGP1344After wondering around looking for a spot to sleep as it was cold, we get back to train station as the waiting room was opened. It wasn’t heated but we still manage to sleep in a sleeping bag on a bench… IMGP1346 Tomorrow we have continued to Prague…

Happy in Zadar,Croatia…

DAY 21:WROCLAW- hangover and meeting with Majka from’ House of Peace’ :D

I spent all morning sleeping after a long night out.

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraDigital StillCameraWe went for a walk in the afternoon. I went to get some food in Bar Mewa where they serve food with reduced prices, so I had full meal for 8 zloti or 2 euro.

Digital StillCameraThen we went to same space where I watched documentary night before and there I met Majka and she works for House of Peace that has been active locally for last 5 years. Their main projects are focused on improving relations between different ethnic groups in Wroclaw Nadozde area.

They have been working a lot with young people in the community and she gave me as a present a music cd of a teenager hiphop band 😀

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraDigital StillCameraWroclaw is beautiful in the evening and I enjoyed walking around with Evelyn.

Day 20: WROCLAW..with Adrian around the city; WrocDoc at night

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraWe arrived very early to Wroclaw.

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraIt was 6am as we walked around town. Our host Adrian has worked the night shift so we met at 7.30am at his place. After few hours of sleep we went together to city center and I liked the architecture and colours…

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraThen he took us to a nice healthy food restaurant where we had great time together.

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraThey make excellent soups and vegetarian dishes and really good smoothies..

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCameraLater that night I went to see a documentary and there I met some of Adrian’s friends and we had interesting discussion after the film. It was a documentary about religion and science by Richard Dawkins and it served as a good base for debate. I wasn’t to impressed with the film itself as it seemed a bit too subjectively presented, but it still made some interesting points that were discussed afterwards.

After we went out for a drink as the organizer of WROC DOC Paul had a leaving party. Of course, few of us stayed for more then one and this resulted with my first hangover of the trip 😛

It was  7am when I came back to Adrian’s place…

DAY 19: POZNAN; walks and pancakes; late night train to WROCLAW…

Digital StillCameraWe spend our last day in Poznan in walks, relaxing time with our hosts and sharing some pancakes.

Digital StillCameraDigital StillCamera

Digital StillCameraWhile they were studying I spent hours on their laptop updating blog and sending request for couch in Wroclaw.

Digital StillCameraIMGP1340Late at night we took a train to Wroclaw and on the waz we got a message from our host Adrian in Wroclaw.

Even though I haven’t seen many people regarding my project, we had great time in Poznan and made new friends.
